Basic Rules of Badminton | India At Olympics

Badminton can be played in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles category.

Singles where 2 players play the match, doubles where a pair of players play with other pair meaning 2 men play against 2 men or 2 women play against 2 women. Mixed Doubles, meaning 1 man and 1 woman play against 1 man and 1 woman.

Before any match start, coin is tossed to decide who will serve first in first game and in subsequent games winner of previous game serves first.
Badminton court is like what is shown here. Players stand in right service court when his/her score is even and in left side when score is odd. For Singles match, shuttle should not fall out of 'Side line for Singles' and for Doubles match, out of 'Side Line for Doubles' as marked in below picture.

In Badminton match, unlike the sets in Tennis, there are games and each one is of 21 points, so whoever wins 21 points first wins that Game and not match. If you want to win the match then you need to win 2 consecutive games. else the match goes into 3rd game then whosoever wins last 2 games wins the match.

If in any game, both players score 20 each then one of them has to get the lead of 2 points to win that game like 26-24. If that does not happen and score reach 29 each then whoever wins the next point wins the game.

With this information, you can be assured of watching and enjoying badminton match at the same time. No need to ask anyone around you, what are the rules.
