Indian Olympic Sports Updates | Week June 24, 2017
Badminton Updates -
Kidambi Srikanth won Indonesia Badminton Championship on June 18, 2017. He out-classed 47th ranked Kazumasa Sakai by 21-11, 21-19 in 37 mins to lift the Super Series title, making it his 3rd one.
Srikanth was trailing behind by 6-11 points but then bounced back to make it equal by 13-13 and thats what put the pressure on Sakai, ultimately loosing match to Srikanth.
Srikanth has won $75000 has prize money in tournament, also Badminton Association of India announced reward of Rs 5 Lakhs to Srikanth.
HS Prannoy had lost to Kazumasa Sakai in semi-finals of Indonesia open, else it would have been an Indian vs Indian match in finals of Indonesia Open.
Australian Super Series Badminton Updates -
Parupalli Kashyap, Siril Verma and Ruthvika Gadde have made to main draw of Australian Open beating their opponents. They had to win 2 matches each in qualifying rounds to enter into main draw.
In the first round of Australian Open, India tasted winnings for its big players like Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth.
In 1st round, Saina Nehwal, defending champion of Australian open won her match against no4 ranked Sung Ji Hyun by 21-10, 21-16. In 2nd round, Saina beat USA's Soniia Cheah by 21-15, 20-22, 21-14. Saina looked confident as all eyes in women's singles are on her to see if she can keep the title.
In 1st round, PV Sindhu fought hard to make it to second round beating Sakaya Sato of Japan by 21-17, 14-21, 21-18. In 2nd one, Sindhu defeated Chen Xiaoxin of China by 21-13, 21-18 games in 46 mins.
In 1st round, Srikanth had beaten Kan Chao Yu by 21-13, 21-16 and Sai Praneeth beat Tommy Sugiarto by 10-21, 21-12, 21-10. In 2nd one, Srikanth had to fight hard to win against world no 1 Son Won Ho of Korea by 15-21, 21-13, 21-13. Sai Praneeth won against Huang Yuxiang by 21-15, 18-21, 21-13 keeping hopes alive for him and India to reach quarters.
Hockey Updates -
Indian Men's Hockey Team has defeated Pakistan team by 7-1 in Hockey World League Semi Final Cup's match in London on June 18, 2017. It was the 3rd consecutive win for Indian team in cup.
Harmanpreet Singh, Talwinder Singh and Akashdeep Singh scored 2 goals each against Pakistani team. Pradeep Mor score one at 49th min. Lone goal from Pakistan was made by Bhutta at 57th Min
India lost to Netherlands after this match by 1-3, but had already secured place in quarter-finals of league. Akashdeep Singh scored lone goal from Indian side.
Indians were clear favorites against 14th ranked Malaysia in quarter-finals but the team played overconfidently loosing by 2-3. Indian start and defense were both week. Indians gave 7 penalty corners and Malaysian's converted 3 out of those into goals, killing Indian hopes to win the match.
Ramandeep Singh scored 2 goals to rescue the India but in veins. Indian Team need to overcome the slowness and become agile if they want to bring back the glory of Hockey in India.
Tennis Updates -
Mixed Doubles winner Rohan Bopanna has paired with Ivan Dodig of Croatia for Aegon Championship/Queens' Club Championship, currently going on in London. Rohan's pair has defeated K Edmund-T Kokkinakis in 3 sets of 6-3, 6-7, 10-7 to enter in quarter finals. Rohan/Ivan stunned no 1 pair of J Peers/H Kontinen to come victorious in 7-6, 4-6, 10-2 sets.
Boxing Delight!! Boxer Vijender Singh and Chinese boxer Zulpikar Maimaitiali to fight for Asian Middleweight title in Mumbai in August!!
